Don't throw it away!
A guide to passing your gently used items on.
It might be easier to simply throw things away, but it is better if we donate our gently used items. Donated items may help those in need when an organization makes your items directly available to those who need clothing, furniture or household items. Donated items may be sold by an organization, providing resources for a foundation and jobs. Reused items are kept from the landfill and may prevent people from buying something new. Ultimately helping the earth with less manufacturing resources, less environmental transportation impact, and reducing the impact on landfills.
Here are some guidelines to make your donations do the most good. Most organizations that accept your gently used goods for distribution or resale have limited space, staffing and financial resources. You want to donate what they can use, not items that will be thrown away. You don't what your donation to end up costing these organizations money or time, so please consider these
guidelines when deciding what to donate and what to throw away.
Generally speaking, your items should be gently used and in a condition that you would want to receive them for yourself or your family.
It is strongly recommended that you visit the website of the organization you plan to donate your items to before you pack up the car. It will save you from sorting through your items when you arrive and the donation spot, and save the organization from having to throw away items they cannot use or sell. (Keep in mind that these organizations, like any business, must pay for their trash.)

RECYCLE
Textile collections at School and Transfer Station Worn out clothes, pillows and stuffed animals often cannot be recycled or resold. But they can be recycled! Just drop them off at the collection bins at the school and transfer station. The bonus is that the PTO earns funds for each pound of textiles we drop in the bin. Bay State Textiles offers a solution to deal with the problem of unwanted textiles. We partner with schools and communities to create a process for diverting clothing donations along with shoes, and fabrics away from the solid waste stream. Instead of being thrown away, textiles create a new source of revenue for your community. Learn more here: https://www.baystatetextiles.com/ Local veterinarians can use your old towels Most veterinarians will put a nice clean towel in your pet carrier when you are ready to take your pet home from an appointment. You can donate your old, faded, stained but clean towels to the vet so they will always have some on hand to send home with their furry clients. This is a great way to donate old towels that are not pretty enough to offer to Household Goods! Just ask your vet or search for a local vet online. We're pretty sure they will be delighted with your offer! |
